Quite often, the 3 Guianas are left out of the major regional meetings taking place in South America mainly due to language barriers between the countries but also due to geographical distances (translated into long hours of flights) which discourage any participation to these events. Among the various objectives of the RENFORESAP project, there is also the will to have a united entity between French Guiana, Suriname and Guyana to link with the network of protected areas of South America. Since the beginning of the project, various actions have been made possible through collaborations between IAPA (Protected Areas Integration Program of the South American Protected Areas Network - REDPARQUES) and RENFORESAP, for instance, a sub-regional meeting in 2018 and training sessions on governance in 2019.
The importance to collaborate was once again the talking points during a meeting held in the EU-REDPARQUES pavillon at the 3rd Congress of Protected Areas of Latin America and the Caribbean in Lima from the 14 to 17th October 2019. On IAPA’s invitation, the RENFORESAP project had the opportunity to hold a stand among other regional initiatives at the pavillon and to attend a strategic meeting on the continuation of IAPA’s actions. All the countries agreed, as well as RENFORESAP being the focal point for the Guainas, to sustain this collaboration in the event IAPA receives the requested funding. However, some adjustments were suggested like having more sub-regional meetings to facilitate the participation of all countries and having interpretation during meetings and translated supports in all the languages of the countries of the network.
Other than that, the 3rd Congress met most of its target and concluded in several recommendations. The various working groups have underlined the need to work more at a national level, to strengthen the protected areas, to work more in networks, to have more cooperation between these networks, to work more closely to the governments and to have meaningful engagement of indigenous communities.
Très souvent, les 3 Guyanes sont exclues des grands rendez-vous régionaux qui se déroulent en Amérique du Sud principalement à cause des barrières linguistiques entre les pays mais aussi à cause de la distance géographique (traduite en longues heures de vols) qui découragent toute participation à ces événements. Parmi les différents objectifs du projet RENFORESAP, il y a aussi la volonté d'avoir une entité unie entre la Guyane, le Suriname et le Guyana pour collaborer avec le réseau des aires protégées d'Amérique du Sud. Depuis le début du projet, diverses actions ont été rendues possibles grâce à des collaborations entre IAPA (Programme d'intégration des aires protégées du Réseau sud-américain des aires protégées - REDPARQUES) et RENFORESAP notamment à travers une réunion sous-régionale en 2018 et des sessions de formation sur la gouvernance en 2019.
L'importance de collaborer a été une fois de plus à l’agenda d'une réunion qui s'est tenue au pavillon UE-REDPARQUES lors du 3e Congrès des aires protégées d'Amérique latine et des Caraïbes à Lima du 14 au 17 octobre 2019. Sur invitation d'IAPA, le projet RENFORESAP a eu l'occasion de tenir un stand au sein du pavillon, parmi d'autres initiatives régionales, et de participer à une réunion stratégique sur la poursuite des actions d’IAPA. Tous les pays ont convenu, ainsi que RENFORESAP étant le point focal pour les Guyanes, de maintenir cette collaboration dans l’éventualité où IAPA recevrait le financement demandé. Cependant, certains ajustements ont été suggérés, comme la tenue de réunions sous-régionales pour faciliter la participation de tous les pays et l’interprétariat pendant les réunions, ainsi que la traduction des supports dans toutes les langues des pays du réseau.
Autrement, le 3e Congrès a atteint la plupart de ses objectifs et a formulé plusieurs recommandations. Les différents groupes de travail ont souligné la nécessité de travailler davantage au niveau national, de consolider les aires protégées, de travailler davantage en réseaux, d’avoir davantage de collaborations entre ces réseaux, de travailler plus étroitement avec les gouvernements et d'avoir une implications significative des communautés autochtones.
